Mia Farrow's Son Thaddeus Died of Suicide: Medical Examiner

Actress Mia Farrow's son Thaddeus committed suicide, sustaining a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his torso, the Connecticut Office of Chief Medical Examiner confirms to PEOPLE.

On Wednesday, Thaddeus Wilk Farrow, 27, was found inside his vehicle "suffering from a life threatening injury," according to a Connecticut State Police report obtained by PEOPLE.

He was taken to Danbury Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:30 p.m.

Mia Farrow adopted Thaddeus in 1994 from Calcutta, India, years after Farrow separated from partner Woody Allen in 1992. He was a paraplegic after having contracted polio in the orphanage.

According to reports, Thaddeus lived in Torrington, about 24 miles from where his car was found. Public records show he lived at his mother's property until a few years ago.

Thaddeus was studying to become a police officer, according to a 2013 Vanity Fair article.

In that interview, he offered insight into what it was like to be adopted by a movie star.

"It was scary to be brought to a world of people whose language I did not understand, with different skin colors," he said. "The fact that everyone loved me was a new experience, overwhelming at first."

Mia Farrow has been a mother to 14 children in her life, but Thaddeus is the third adopted child she has lost. Farrow has 11 living children, four biological and seven adopted.

Farrow released a statement on Twitter Thursday afternoon. The statement included a link to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

The statement read: "We're devastated by the loss of Thaddeus, our beloved son and brother. He was a wonderful, courageous person who overcame so much hardship in his short life. We miss him.
