The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says it will soon begin the conduct of its examination for private candidates, popularly called GCE, twice in a year with effect from 2017.

The council Registrar, Iyi Uwadiae, spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria on the sidelines of the council’s “Registrar’s Staff Appraisal Committee’’ meeting on Wednesday in Accra, Ghana.

Mr. Uwadiae said, “The West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates known as the November/December diet for private candidates will now be conducted in January/February and August/September.’’

According to him, the measure is to ensure that many private candidates, who desire the certificate for various purposes, will have the opportunity of writing the examination and acquire the certificate.

“We have concluded arrangements to commence writing of our WASSCE for private candidates twice a year from 2017.

“This will take place in January /February and August/September every year in all the member countries.

“This development, however, does not affect that of the school candidates, popularly called May/June.

“That one remains once a year for all school candidates,” Mr. Uwadiae said.

He explained that administering the WASSCE for private candidates twice a year was part of the projections of the council in 2017.

According to him, as part of its mandate to render qualitative service to all member nations, the council is looking forward to a more rewarding 2017.

“That is the essence of this meeting, which brings all the Heads of National Offices (HNO) from member countries together.

“This meeting takes place once a year to discuss the appraisals of the international staff in member countries and recommend members of staff that are due for promotion.

“During the meeting too, there is also a follow up action on staff with negative appraisals after which recommendations from the committee are forwarded to the international committee for ratifications.

“All these are parts of what we do in order to make the activities of the council more relevant and beneficial to our people,’’ he said.

Mr. Uwadiae lauded the HNOs for their resilience, doggedness and dedication in the face of peculiar challenges in their respective countries and for ensuring a smooth conduct of the examinations.

Describing them as the council’s foot soldiers, the registrar thanked the HNOs for the support accorded him as the overall head of the regional examination body.

“As foot soldiers of the council, I must say that they have done well and deserve the commendation of the council as we look forward to a better 2017.

“They (HNOs) have been meeting the mandate of conducting and releasing results of the various examinations within the stipulated periods and coordinating activities in their respective national offices,’’ he said.

Mr. Uwadiae said that WAEC was also looking forward to conducting its examination in many other countries with English speaking students, studying with Nigeria curriculum as possible.

“We are open to any country in Africa which desire to have us set examination for students, who are being taught with English and uses Nigeria curriculum.

As long as these countries have all requisites needed for the conduct of our examination on ground, we will be there to carry out our mandate.

“For instance, we are currently rendering such services to some French speaking countries like Togo, Benin Republic and Cote d’Ivoire.

“These countries approached the council and we are doing that for their English speaking students who want our certificates,” he said.

See Breakdown of 200,000 Selected Employed Graduates To Start Work Soon – VP Osinbajo

150,000 to teach
30,000 to serve as Agricultural Extension workers
20,000 as public health workers

Laolu Akande, Abuja: The inaugural set of 200,000 unemployed graduates already selected in the first batch of the N-power volunteer job and training scheme of the Buhari Social Investment Programmes should start work in the next two weeks.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN made this disclosure over the weekend while speaking at the Apostolic Coalition Summit in Lagos.

According to him as a stop gap measure, the Buhari administration is engaged in direct creation of jobs, including the plan to create 500, 000 jobs for unemployed graduates.

He explained that the programme should have commenced “as at October 31, 2016, but is delayed on account of the fact that we are trying to get as many of the equipment's that we require,” referring to the tablets that would be given to all the 500,000 N-power undergraduate participants.

The Vice President also explained that efforts are being made “to ensure that all across the country, we are able to provide those opportunities as we promised.”

Already 200,000 unemployed Nigerians have been selected, including 150,000 who would teach and serve in their communities. The balance is made up of 30,000 who would serve as Agric Extension Workers and 20,000 who would serve as public health workers.

Each of the unemployed graduates would get a N30,000 monthly stipend, and also get an electronic tablet that would be packaged with several applications that would train and empower the participants.

Vice President reiterated that the N-Power scheme was launched as a volunteer programme “to create temporary opportunities for young graduates, to at least be doing something and many of them would be volunteer teachers, health officials and extension workers, who will earn a stipend.”

He added that the participants will also have a device “and that device has a lot of training brochures, different forms of training brochures and it’s also a device that enables them to be able to, on a continuous basis, learn different things, some code-writing, some entrepreneurial skills. There are lot of varieties of material that can be learned on the device. The device is also a means of communicating with them wherever they may be in the country.”

He noted that “at the moment close to a million graduates have registered on the volunteered scheme and we should be doing the first 200,000 in the next 14 days or so, we should be able to get started with the first 200,000 across the country.”

While the federal government would pay the 200,000 directly, state governments would play an active role in their deployment to the needed areas. The first batch of 200,000 selected volunteers are also being screened using the BVN so as to properly set-up the payment of their monthly stipends.

Nairalogue with Ifeoma Adeoye: Do Not Under-Estimate the Power of Your Side Hustle

The importance of having multiple revenue streams, for anyone who is interested in building wealth, cannot be over emphasized. Even if it is dividend pay-outs from stocks or buying and selling things on the side and making a margin, it is important for everyone to have a side hustle.
A side hustle is, as the name implies, something you do on the side. It does not matter if you have a job or you are self-employed or you are a stay at home mum. Any extra activity you do to generate additional income, outside your main “job” is a side hustle.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always had a side hustle, no matter how small and “crappy” it is. I get a sense of fulfilment from knowing that I am due to get an extra N100 from somewhere that I could put to alternative uses.
Given the current state of our economy, not all of us can be brave enough to up and quit the safety of the steady salary that we get from our current employment. Now, more than ever, it has become imperative for the average Nigerian to find ways to increase their revenue flow. Maintaining a hustle on the side may mean that we cannot give it the time and effort it requires to turn it into a full blown multi million naira business in the short term, but guess what? That little extra is better than nothing in the interim.

Earning an additional N30,000 every month may not seem like a big deal but the power of saving and compounding the entirety of that money should not be underestimated.

Let us assume that you have a full time job and you make ends meet with the salary you get from this job. Let us also assume that you have a side hustle from which you generate N30,000, net, every month. Since you “survive” on your salary, you can save this additional N30,000. Assuming you invest this N30,000 in mutual funds (assuming 10% return per annum) every month, at the end of twelve months, your account would look like this:
Not bad right? Now imagine that this is repeated and compounded over the next five years – That will be N2,342,471! That N30,000 a month side hustle. It doesn’t seem so small now, does it?

It is very easy to start and manage a side hustle. Most side hustles require minimal start-up costs and the amount of time you have to put in every month is also fairly minimal. Earning that little bit more every month adds up eventually. It may look like a “little” sum to you now, but in time, your “little” five figure side hustle income will turn into seven figures and people will wonder how you did it.

Earn, Save, Invest, REPEAT!

Remember, start now, start small – just do it!

Maximize your income through oil and gas business made simple

Over the years, people all around the world have been saving money from the petroleum products they use and now for the first time such opportunity has being provided to us in a more lucrative way. An American multinational oil and gas company that is in operation for over 100 countries of the world, cut across all the continent has brought to us a means of saving the consumption rate of our Petroleum Products ( Petrol, diesel, cooking gas, kerosene and even marine fuel).

This is now a means of financial empowerment for individual and corporate bodies irrespective of your status.

Taking a look at the present situation of the global economy with Nigeria as a case study, the price of fuel has increased from N86.50k to N145, diesel is now N200, Kerosene from N50 /litre to N225/litre, cooking gas from N2600 for 12.5kg to N4000 for 12.5kg etc, the ripple effect of all the increase is the high cost of other products in the market. Companies are now finding it difficult to survive leading to so many people losing their Jobs. This is the problem that faces the economy now and the solution is what the American Multinational Oil and Gas Company presents to you. The company is partnering with people from various sectors in the world.

U.S. invites young Nigerians for 2017 Mandela Washington Fellowship

The U.S. Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria on Friday announced the opening of applications from qualified young Nigerians for the 2017 Mandela Washington Fellowship programme.

The Embassy in Abuja said the Mandela Washington Fellowship is the flagship programme of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative, and a key part of the U.S. commitment to invest in the future of Africa.

The embassy said Nigerian youth are encouraged to pursue the opportunity offered by the programme to access a six-week training course at a top U.S. university in one of three tracks: Business and Entrepreneurship, Civic Leadership or Public Management.

“Eligible candidates should be between the ages of 25 and 35 at the time of application and have a demonstrated track record of leadership in a public, private, or civic organization, and a commitment to contributing their skills and talents to build and serve their communities,” the embassy said.

It directed interested candidates to either visit http://www.yali.state.gov to apply and seek further information, or the Information Resource Center at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, U.S. Consulate General in Lagos or one of the 11 American Corners in Nigeria.

Deadline for application was given as October 26.

Nearly one in three Africans are between the ages of 10 and 24, and around 60 per cent of Africa’s total population is below the age of 35.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship is part of the President’s overall effort to invest in the education and training of the continent’s next generation of leaders.

In 2010, President Obama launched YALI as a vehicle to support an emerging generation of African leaders.

In 2014, the program was expanded to include 500 young African leaders from sub-Saharan Africa.

In 2016, 1,000 young Africans participated in the Fellowship.

Since its inception, 186 young Nigerians have participated in the fellowship, and over 45,000 young professionals in Nigeria have joined the YALI network.

In 2016, 100 young Nigerians participated in the fellowship.
